When Pictures Pop-Up with Amy Neyer - Episode #130

Hello Brave Friends, if you’re on planet earth right now, you probably have social media. It’s a handy tool that connects us with friends, allows us to share our lives and generally makes our lives easier… except for when it doesn’t. Lets just say, those memories that “pop up”, aren’t always welcome.

Today we hear Amy Neyer’s story about her early days navigating the medical system with a child battling a rare disease. Her son was diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome as well as many other diagnoses, but the road to those answers was far from easy. In her conversation with host, Jessica Patay, Amy shares about the confusion and pain that accompanied not being believed by health care professionals and about doing the work today to separate her child’s health conditions and struggles with her worth as a parent.

Amy Neyer is a wife, mother, physical therapist, and writer, born and raised in Southern California. Her writing has been featured in various online outlets such as the We Are Brave Together blog, Today’s Parent magazine, and The Mighty. She was a guest on the Brave Together Podcast in 2020, and has also shared some of her motherhood stories on stage and online through Expressing Motherhood storytelling shows. Amy’s writing helps her process her experiences with motherhood, while also connecting with other families, patients and caregivers living in the world of rare diseases. As a neurologic physical therapist, Amy specializes in helping people with rare and complex conditions. She is passionate about PT education, advocacy and mentorship, and has taught professional courses on treatments for people with rare conditions. When she’s not with her family, working, or writing, she can be found recharging with ocean swims, beach runs, walks with friends, and maintaining a daily meditation practice.
